Dieppe is set to host the 44th Finale of the Jeux de l’Acadie, a vibrant event that unites young athletes and artists from across Atlantic Canada.
The event runs from this Wednesday until the end of June, offering a unique blend of competitive sports, creative workshops, and cultural showcases.
The Jeux de l’Acadie was established to bring francophone youth together and has grown into a multi-generational tradition that connects families to their heritage.
The opening ceremony is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at UNIPlex on the UNI surface and will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person. The closing ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. next Monday at the same venue.
Nicole Melanson, team lead for the communications committee, who has been deeply involved with the Games over the years, said the event is much more than a series of competitions.
“When you see parents decked out in their region’s colours and cheering, it is not just about the sport—it is about being part of something bigger,” Melanson said.
She added that for herself and the organizers, the Games play an important role in inspiring community spirit and pride.
“We’ll be welcoming 2,000 to 2,500 people next week, and with hundreds of volunteers, it really comes together for a great week,” Melanson said.
Officials are also expecting more than 1,200 young participants at this year’s event.
The competitions and ceremonies will be held at several key locations in Dieppe.
Competitions are scheduled at the New Brunswick Community College (505 College Street), École Sainte-Thérèse (500 Notre Dame Street), and the Dieppe Tennis Club (489 Notre Dame Street).
The track and field events on Saturday will be held at École Anna-Malenfant on Centrale Street, with a public shuttle service running between the Arthur-J.-LeBlanc Centre and École Anna-Malenfant.
Special traffic measures have been arranged to ease the influx of vehicles.
Attendees are encouraged to check for the latest parking maps and transit options.
Melanson also emphasized that the 44th Finale of the Jeux de l’Acadie is more than a series of competitions.
She explained it’s a celebration of Acadian identity and community spirit that carries forward a cherished local tradition.
