A free outdoor skills workshop in Saint John is giving newcomers a chance to learn the basics of camping and outdoor safety, with help from Parks Canada.
The event, hosted by the Saint John Newcomers Centre, takes place on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the centre’s office on Prince William Street.
It’s open to all newcomers and community members, and no registration fee is required.
Zara Larionova, a settlement advisor with the newcomers centre, said the workshop is the first of its kind to be offered fully in person.
“I feel like this time is going to be so much hands-on experience,” Larionova said.
“You know, the first time you will have the opportunity to use the gear yourself, to go inside the tent, to use the equipment provided, just to even look closer to ask questions, I think this is just amazing.”
Participants will learn how to set up a tent, prepare for changing weather, and understand the basics of outdoor safety.
Parks Canada staff will be on-site to demonstrate gear and answer questions.
Larionova said the idea for the event came after Parks Canada reached out, offering to support newcomers with outdoor education.
“Well they promise to share some tips on respecting wildfire, protecting the environment, and understanding Canadian outdoor safety culture,” she said.
“As we know, wildfire is a huge problem um in Canada during the summer season. So, we want our newcomers to stay safe and to protect nature.”
She said many newcomers come from regions where camping is not a common cultural practice, and the goal is to help them feel more confident and included in outdoor life in Canada.
The event also aims to foster a sense of community. Larionova said families often meet at these sessions and discover shared interests, sometimes even planning future camping trips together.
All equipment will be provided on-site, including a full-size tent for demonstration.
Larionova added that the session is a good opportunity for people to learn about gear before making any purchases.
Early registration is available through the Saint John Newcomers Centre’s social media pages, but walk-ins are welcome.
