A Saint John police officer is being recognized for his outstanding performance at the 2025 World Police and Fire Games in Birmingham, Alabama.
Detective Constable James Smith, a 14-year member of the Saint John Police, earned eight medals in rifle shooting events, including three gold, four silver and one bronze.
He also achieved a personal best score during the competition, which ran from June 27 to July 6.
The World Police and Fire Games is an Olympic-style event that brings together more than 8,500 athletes from over 50 countries. Participants include members of law enforcement and fire services from around the world.
Smith competed in both large and small-bore rifle events, representing Canada in individual and team categories.

His gold medals came in the following events:
- Large Bore Rifle – Individual – 20 shots at 200, 300 and 600 yards
- Large Bore Rifle – Team Canada – 20 shots at 200, 300 and 600 yards
- Large Bore Rifle – Individual – 60 shots prone at 300 yards
He also earned four silver medals in:
- Large Bore Rifle – Team Canada – 60 shots at 300 yards
- Small Bore Rifle – Individual – 60 shots at 50 metres
- Small Bore Rifle – Team Canada – 60 shots at 50 metres
- Small Bore Rifle – Individual – 3-position (20 shots prone, kneeling and standing)
Smith’s bronze medal was awarded in the Small Bore Rifle – Team Canada – 3-position event.
“Detective Constable Smith’s success at the World Police and Fire Games is a result of his endless training, determination and commitment to excellence,” Chief Robert Bruce said in a statement.
“He has once again proudly represented the Saint John Police and the City of Saint John on an international level. On behalf of all our members, we commend him on his accomplishments.”
Smith has been competing in the Games since 2017, with previous appearances in Los Angeles, Chengdu, Rotterdam and Winnipeg.
He now holds more than 20 medals for his achievements in international competition.
