A family in St. George has a new place to call home thanks to a non-profit organization.
Habitat for Humanity recently completed its second build in the Charlotte County community.
Officials gathered at the three-bedroom bungalow on Thursday for a home dedication ceremony.
Perry Kendall, CEO of Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick, said this is a favourite part of his job.
“To see the family moving into their home and realizing that dream of home ownership and having an affordable home ownership model that’s going to be sustainable for them for the long term, it is really exciting,” Kendall told our newsroom.
Officials said the home was made possible, in large part, due to a donation of land by the Municipality of Eastern Charlotte.
Acquisition of suitable land is always a significant first step to the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes, said Kendall.
“Having a suitable land for homes is certainly a challenge and can be quite an expensive undertaking,” he said.
“This is the second home that’s been built on land donated by the Municipality of Eastern Charlotte, and we’re very pleased with their support.
Perry said their homeownership model begins by identifying families in need of affordable housing. They have to have a stable earned income and fall within income bands based on the size of the family,” he said.
“The big differences are that there’s no down payments, and mortgage payments are geared to income, so at no point will a family ever be paying more than 25 per cent of their earned income towards their mortgage and property taxes,” said Perry.
In addition to municipal support, Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick also receives $70,000 per unit from the provincial government for up to 10 new homes per year.
Perry said that it helps to accelerate the number of homes that they can build, supporting even more families in need across the province.
This marks the 18th affordable home the corporation and Habitat for Humanity New Brunswick have built since 2023.
