A police officer was cleared of any potential criminal offences after a suspect was found with photos of sensitive police information.
SiRT says the Fredericton Police Force seized a cellphone in 2023 during a drug investigation.
On the phone, they found photos of an officer’s personal computer, including sensitive police information. The metadata attached to the photos showed they were taken at the residence of the accused on the accused’s phone, according to a summary of the investigation.
The officer told SiRT his wife had thrown away the computer and he did not believe the device was protected by a password.
SiRT says there is no reason to believe the man knew the suspect got hold of his old computer.
“While it is unusual and careless that a police officer’s computer ended up in the possession of the Accused, based on the available evidence I do not have reasonable and probable grounds to believe that the [suspect officer] provided the computer or the documents to the Accused, or that he had knowledge the Accused was in possession of the documents,” wrote Erin E. Nauss, director of SiRT, in a summary of the investigation.
