A majority of Canadians are confident in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s leadership on economic matters.
However, a new poll finds few residents believe the United States’ trade relationship should be the top concern.
The survey by Narrative Research and the Logit Group finds 62 per cent are confident in Carney’s economic leadership.
Nearly six in 10 of those surveyed said they believe recent tariffs have shattered Canada’s relationship with the U.S.
Older Canadians aged 55 and over are more likely to believe that the trade relationship is broken, said the survey.
“With a new trade agreement expected within the next two weeks, there is clearly a lot of pressure on Prime Minister Carney to negotiate a fair deal for Canada,” Margaret Chapman, COO of Narrative Research, said in a news release.
“However, Canadians aren’t necessarily thinking that the U.S. relationship is key to improving the country’s economic situation.”
In fact, fewer than one-third believe repairing that trade relationship should be our most important economic priority.
Meanwhile, two-thirds of those who answered feel like Canada will experience an economic recession in 2025, with men more likely than women to believe that.
Results are from an online survey conducted between June 13 and 16 with 1,231 Canadians.
