Residents in New Brunswick now have an additional option for accessing quick health care at their local pharmacy.
Pharmacists across the province are newly authorized to assess and prescribe for three more conditions:
- Seasonal allergies
- Oral thrush
- Common fungal skin infections (athlete’s foot, jock itch and ringworm)
These consultations are publicly funded, meaning patients won’t pay a service fee, according to a government release.
Health Minister John Dornan said the change will make it easier for people to get timely care and relieve some of the pressure on clinics and emergency departments.
“These types of health concerns are within the scope of practice of pharmacists in New Brunswick,” Dornan said in the release.
“We continue to value the role pharmacists can play in helping New Brunswickers receive the right care at the right time from the right health professional.”
With this latest update, pharmacists are now funded to treat 15 common ailments and administer certain vaccines.
The Department of Health advised that pharmacy services may vary, so patients should contact their pharmacy in advance to confirm availability.
While assessments and prescriptions are covered, any prescribed medications must still be paid for out of pocket.
