New details have been released about what led to an emergency alert in the Fredericton area on Tuesday.
RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at a home in Richibucto Road shortly after 4 a.m.
No one was hurt, and the three suspects fled in a burgundy SUV before officers arrived.
At around 7 a.m., Mounties were told the same people had stolen several items from a business on Route 104 in Zealand and fled in the SUV.
The vehicle crashed a short time later and was found abandoned on the side of the road, according to police.
RCMP issued an alert just after 8:15 a.m. telling people in the Zealand and Burtts Corner areas to shelter in place.
The alert said that police were looking for individuals “believed to be carrying weapons with dangerous intent.”
Officers arrested a 16-year-old from Kingsclear First Nation and an 18-year-old Minto woman near a school in Burtts Corner around 9 a.m. The alert was lifted about 40 minutes later.
“Based on the current investigation, police have determined that there is no longer an imminent threat to public safety,” RCMP said in a news release on Wednesday.
“The decision to conclude the alert was made after assessing that the remaining individual is not believed to pose an immediate risk to the general public at this time.”
The youth has since been charged with possessing stolen property, theft and breach of probation. He was remanded into custody pending a future court appearance.
Police later released the 18-year-old woman, who will appear in court at a later date. Investigators have identified the third person and are still searching for them.
