Smokers will have to watch where they light up from now on because new regulations are now in effect with escalating fines.
The initial fine is $140 or up to $11 hundred if the charge is disputed. If a smoker is sentenced to the maximum fine and is caught again, the fine can be as high as $21 hundred.
Tickets can be issued for smoking within nine metres of doorways, windows and air intakes of indoor workplaces and enclosed public places, on patios outdoors where food and or alcohol is served as well as within three metres of the patio’s boundary, within 20 metres of children’s equipment and sports areas that are outdoors and within nine metres of an outdoor public walking or jogging trail.
