I’ve been known to be sentimental, but this crosses some sort of strange line I would think.
Years ago, (and it’s obvious from the best before date), I had a family member comment that I should be baking pies with my daughter, my only child at the time.
So I bought a pie.
This exact pie.
I have cleaned out my pantry several times in the last 7 years, and somehow this lemony-treat always makes the cut. Strange, right?
Let me give you some perspective.
Since the purchase of the aforementioned pie, I have been married and divorced, had two more kids, bought two different homes, switched jobs a couple times, bought two trailers, got a dog and yet the pie has remained a weird little constant.
It wasn’t until yesterday when my two daughters cleaned the pantry that the issue of the pie was put forward. “Best Before 2004”.
I asked what they did with Old Yeller, (like I care!) and they told me they threw it in a bag to take out to the garbage bin. We laughed hard. It was so funny!
At first.
Then I went and retrieved the pie. I mean, if it’s come this far with me there has to be a reason, right?
To answer your question, yes, I have made pies in the last 15 years. But never lemon. And lemon is an easy Top 3 finish for me when it comes to favourite pies, just after coconut cream and right before blueberry.
Look, I don’t think I am going to solve any great mystery here, nor do I understand the psychology behind holding onto something like this for so long. What I do know is that I’m heading to the City Market to look for lemon pie. I suddenly want a piece.
After all these years.
