The Progressive Conservative MLA for Saint John East says he is now cancer-free.
Glen Savoie received a standing ovation after announcing the news in the legislature on Wednesday morning.
“I just wanted to give notice and inform the house that, as of yesterday, I received a diagnosis that I was cancer-free,” said Savoie.
Savoie announced in June that he had been diagnosed with what appeared to be multiple myeloma.
After experiencing pain and discomfort “for some time,” the MLA said he was sent for an MRI, which detected the cancer.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, multiple myeloma is a cancer that starts in plasma cells — a type of white blood cell found mainly in the bone marrow that makes antibodies to help the body fight infection.
Savoie thanked his family for their love and support, as well as the “absolutely outstanding” health care system.
He said there are many others battling cancer besides him, and encouraged people to help lift them up.
“I received so many emails and books and texts of encouragement, it was unreal. It was all of those things that made it easier to get through because we don’t get through this alone,” said Savoie.
“If you can offer those things to other folks and help them to not get through their cancer alone, that would be great.”
